Book XI · 14

Men despise one another and flatter one another; and men wish to raise themselves above one another, and crouch before one another.

Thinking scorn of one another, they yet fawn on one another, and eager to outdo their rivals they grovel one to another.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations XI.14. Translated by George Long (1862). The Stoic Library.
