Book VII · 6

How many after being celebrated by fame have been given up to oblivion; and how many who have celebrated the fame of others have long been dead.

How many much-lauded heroes have already been given as a prey unto forgetfulness, and how many that lauded them have long ago disappeared!

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations VII.6. Translated by George Long (1862). The Stoic Library.
