Book VII · 71

It is a ridiculous thing for a man not to fly from his own badness, which is indeed possible, but to fly from other men's badness, which is impossible.

It is absurd not to eschew our own wickedness, which is possible, but to eschew that of others, which is not possible.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations VII.71. Translated by George Long (1862). The Stoic Library.
