Book IX · 18

Penetrate inwards into men's leading principles, and thou wilt see what judges thou art afraid of, and what kind of judges they are of themselves.

Find the way within into their ruling Reason, and thou shalt see what these judges are whom thou fearest and what their judgment of themselves is worth.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations IX.18. Translated by George Long (1862). The Stoic Library.
